Pink Tax (Instillation)

The Pink Tax is a current issue that subjects women to paying higher prices for the exact same products that are marketed towards men that cost significantly less. Companies prey on gender roles, assuming that if they simply change the color of a product to pink and alter their packaging to be geared toward a female audience that it should cost on average 13% more. It is prevalent in many different products and services but in this instillation I focused on personal care products because they are essentials that everyone purchases for their well being and use on a daily basis. I installed a bathroom setting including a sink, mirror, and variety of bathroom products in the 'Laguna College of Art and Design' Library for the 'Color Orientation' show. On each product there is a tag with information about the average price differences that are seen for each item and the overall percentage difference. It is an interactive piece so that the audience can feel immersed in a familiar setting and realize that everyone uses the same products everyday regardless of gender and just because they are in a pink bathroom with pink products shouldn't mean that they should pay anymore than if they were in a blue bathroom with blue products.
